Walter Bortz on FORA TV

This was posted very recently, although as far as I know Bob Graham is retired from the senate. The rest of Bortz's comments are posted here at the FORA website.

Jon, I WANT to applaud this, and to some extent, I do. Problem is, what about those who do get sick, whether through their own fault or not? I understand that he's against the health care bill now making its way through Congress (that nobody seems to favor and rightly so), but is he also against the public option? If so, this just seems another sly move by the right wing.

hi Mimi,

first of all, you know of course that when I post videos of somebody giving a speech it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with the ideas expressed, whether 100 or 75 or 50 percent or what ever, just that I (perhaps foolishly) think the video is likely to be interesting to (our small handful of) DH visitors.

At any rate, I'll admit that I don't know enough about Bortz's broader views to assess them, and like you I recognize that a too dogmatic view of medicine as over-prescribed and bad is nuts.

As far as the public option goes, I suspect that if it were enacted it would function as a dumping ground for the private insurance companies, and quickly run out of money and become an underfunded hellhole.

One way or another single-payer is the only answer, even though I hate the name and sometimes wonder if some of its proponents have deliberately bungled the presentation of the idea.

We certainly agree on this, Jon. I'm afraid I bungled here--I meant "single payer" or "extended medicare," or whatever universal coverage is called, not the public option. Please excuse it--you know, I'm still in the Land of the Locusts and it must have addled my brain.

Oh, good grief, talk about my addled brain! My last two responses somehow came under my daughter's name. Please just forget the whole thing until I get back to Jersey.

In that case give my best to your daughter! (in the unlikely event you're headed to Glendale feel free to say hi to John Garvey of the Fiat Blog for me.)
