This does not seem remotely at odds with other political opinions of the American electorate. It does, however, express their illiteracy in an especially charming way.
Back when there was a draft and I was a young man if you couldn't fake high blood pressure or schizophrenia you could try to fake homosexuality to get out of Vietnam.
The irony was that most gays who were drafted didn't take the easy way out of it. Better to die than to admit to your sexual preference.
And back then I served with plenty of gay men.
So the whole gays in the military thing has always been a sham.
As for using the term gays or homosexuals, it may have something to do with the time frame. Older people who carry around an irrational fear of homosexuality are more likely to have their fear triggered by the old term.
I know, Americans also want tax cuts but they want corporations to pay their fair share.
Am reminded of the Elvis Costello song: "You think they're so dumb. You think they're so funny. Wait until they have you running to the night rally."
