I think that young man will learn the truth of your statement eventually. many people who are of that age (early 20s, I'd guess) are naive, mainly because most of them have been coddled and cosseted up to and through college. Most of them haven't really got the wisdom that comes from experiences with other humans' deceptions. Sure, they might have been jilted by a friend or lover. But it's rare that they truly appreciate how useless idle protest is. It's symbolically important to those who think symbols change minds. I don't think symbols really have that sort of powerful magic over us. I think that's why they're symbols, and not truths.
I remember thinking as that young man did, when I was in my 20s.
